ABSTRACT

Objective To obtain the basic data of Bama minipigs and provide basic reference for embryo-fetal developmental toxicity study. Methods Pregnant minipigs were sacrificed at different days during the gestation period respectively. The examinations included necropsy, count of corporea lutea, live and dead implantations, fetal body weight, and external, visceral, and skeletal examination of fetuses. Results The basic data of Bama minipigs, such as body weight, fetal development, and fetal malformation/variation were obtained. Conclusions We obtained the basic reproductive parameters of pregnant Bama minipigs and the indexes of fetal development, which can provide valuable reference data for embryo-fetal developmental toxicity tests of Bama minipigs.

ABSTRACT

The field of gene therapy has been increasingly studied in the last four decades, and its clinical application has become a reality in the last 15 years. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), an important component of complementary and alternative medicine, has evolved over thousands of years with its own unique system of theories, diagnostics and therapies. TCM is well-known for its various roles in preventing and treating infectious and chronic diseases, and its usage in other modern clinical practice. However, whether TCM can be applied alongside gene therapy is a topic that has not been systematically examined. Here we provide an overview of TCM theories in relation to gene therapy. We believe that TCM theories are congruent with some principles of gene therapy. TCM-derived drugs may also act as gene therapy vehicles, therapeutic genes, synergistic therapeutic treatments, and as co-administrated drugs to reduce side effects. We also discuss in this review some possible approaches to combine TCM and gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To explore the protective effect of ischemic preconditioning on myocardial capillary bed. METHODS: Anesthetized open-chest dogs in ischemic preconditioning (IP) group ( n =6) were subjected to 5 min ischemia and 5 min reperfusion for 4 times in left descending coronary artery (LDA) while the dogs in sham-operated (SO) group ( n =6) were observed for 40 min without any stimulating. Myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) was performed before the surgery, at the end of the first and the fourth ischemia and reperfusion period, respectively. Myocardial samples in ischemic area were obtained for capillaries ultrastructure examination and their quantitative analysis was conducted by corresponding imagine analyzing system, then compared within group and between control group. RESULTS: (1) Comparing fourth 5 min ischemia with first one, the percents of area defect in minimum (AD min%) by MCE decreased from 32.6%?5.7% to 21.8%?5.2%( P
